Dr. Kaushal received his postdoctoral training in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 1991, he moved to Little Rock and joined as a faculty in the Division of Nephrology at UAMS with a joint appointment in the Department of Biochemistry. Dr. Kaushal is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at UAMS since 2005 and also serves as a Research Career Scientist at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. Dr. Kaushal’s research has focused on identifying several novel therapeutic targets of AKI to reduce and prevent the disease by understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved. For the last 20 years, Dr. Kaushal has been studying the role of metalloproteinases, cell death proteases, autophagy, and proteasome system-mediated protein degradation in the pathogenesis of AKI and CKD. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and 25 invited book chapters, reviews, and editorials. Dr. Kaushal’s research is supported by National Institute of Health and Veterans Administration. Dr. Kaushal is also involved in teaching graduate students in signal transduction and cell death mechanisms and serves in VA committees including R&D committee.
